Spiritual Formation Philosophy

Purpose and Principles

Develop and Resource a Spiritual Journey for those who have partnered with Calvary.

This Journey will enable each participant to be more effectively formed to the image of Christ.

Outcome Vision

  • Calvary’s people adopt the mission of Christ as their life mission: relying on the Holy Spirit, relieving suffering, redeeming sin
  • Calvary’s people exhibit the fruit of the spirit on a daily basis
  • Calvary’s people regularly reproduce themselves as disciples of Christ
    • those within the church are discipled by others within the church
    • everyone has a mentor and a mentee
    • those outside the church are brought in to be disciples
  • west michigan is significantly impacted by multiple communities from Calvary
  • needs of calvary’s people are compassionately met by addressing root causes rather than symptoms

Focus on Five

  • Explore Calvary as an experience of the Christian Faith
  • Connect to Calvary as a commitment to the Christian Faith
  • Partner with a Community for growth in the Christian Faith
  • Serve those around you as a demonstration of the Christian Faith
  • Multiply yourself to bring others to the Christian Faith

Brainstorming

  • formative caring and missional groups
  • 3 separate task forces (formative, caring, missional)
  • mentoring program
  • teaching directed toward fruit
  • session on “spiritual dashboard”
  • what does someone need to know to make this happen
  • emphasize spiritual disciplines
  • quarterly sessions on mentoring
  • can this all be done through groups?
  • direct LGs to accomplish these goals
  • LG assesments designed to test f,c,m
  • encourage mentoring groups within LGs
  • a better word for mentoring
  • renovare material for smaller mentoring groups
  • emphasize evangelism
  • series on sharing faith
  • 3-4 designated topics for sermon series each year
  • calendar also includes 3-4 book studies
  • all campaigns 4-6 weeks
  • UC accounts for 2 campaigns
  • book studies follow “x”year calendar

Organizing

Refine vision statements to be more memorable

Create Three Task Forces

  • Formative task force—works with LG and UC, emphasizes connecting
  • Missional Task Force—works with LG and missionaries, emphasizes reproducing(CTF and Restructured MTF
  • Caring Task Force—works with LG and deacons, emphasizes ministry gifts
  • each task force oversees one all-church series per year
  • Missional Task Force also oversees “global missions conference”

LIFEGroups

  • emphasize being formative, caring, and missional
  • developing mentoring (need better name) within LGs, possibly use renovare materials
  • constantly keep vision in front of drivers
  • assesment which reflects f,c,m and vision

Celebration Gatherings

  • Develop an overarching calendar for spiritual formation, identifies special series as well as time slots for book studies which become “elective” times for LGs
  • Topical Series (4-6 weeks)potential ideas include focusing on fruit, developing a spiritual dashboard, and evangelism
  • book studies following a “comprehensive” pattern; alternate genres of books; differing time frames
